Definition

oxidase
['?ks?de?z]
¦ noun Biochemistry an enzyme which promotes the transfer of a hydrogen atom from a particular substrate to an oxygen molecule.

Wikipedia

Oxidase

In biochemistry, an oxidase is an enzyme that catalyzes oxidation-reduction reactions, especially one involving dioxygen (O2) as the electron acceptor. In reactions involving donation of a hydrogen atom, oxygen is reduced to water (H2O) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Some oxidation reactions, such as those involving monoamine oxidase or xanthine oxidase, typically do not involve free molecular oxygen.

The oxidases are a subclass of the oxidoreductases.

Examples of use of oxidase
1. At various points throughout the study, levels of the gene monoamine oxidase A – which is associated with antisocial behaviour – were measured.
2. Earlier studies have shown that low levels of brain chemicals such as serotonin and monoamine oxidase A, also known as MAOA, are linked to violent behaviour in humans and animals.
3. Scientists believe its healing properties are due to the presence of the enzyme glucose oxidase, which produces hydrogen peroxide – an antiseptic – and its high sugar concentration, which inhibits bacterial growth.
4. Speaking at a genetics conference in Australia, Rod Lea said that Maori men were twice as likely as European men to carry mono amine oxidase, describing it as a "striking over–representation" of what has been described as the warrior gene.
5. St John‘s wort contains an SSRI (from the same family of drugs as Prozac); Passiflora contains a mono–amine oxidase inhibitor (a family of drugs that are rarely prescribed because they have dangerous interactions with common foods such as bread, cheese and red wine). Assurance can‘t be given I don‘t doubt that these substances work as antidepressants.
